President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that steps have been taken to provide fertilizer to the farmers without delay in time to meet the Maha Season requirement.
The President also pointed out that by making this season a success, the country’s economic problems could be addressed.
President Wickremesinghe expressed these views this morning (20th) during the discussion held with the Atamasthanadhipathi Chief Sanghanayaka of the North Central Range, Most Venerable Dr. Pallegama Sirinivasa Thera.
The President paid obeisance to the historic Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi this morning and received blessings.
There, the Maha Sangha chanted Seth Pirith to invoke blessings on the President.
During the discussion held with the Atamasthanadhipathi, the President further said that the government is taking steps to solve economic problems by paying greater attention to the agricultural economy.
The President also said that steps will be taken to speed up the excavation of the Maha Viharaya. He also expressed confidence that through this, a large number of tourists from countries such as Myanmar and Burma will be able to be encouraged to visit Sri Lanka.
Presidential Chief of Staff and Senior Adviser to the President on National Security Sagala Ratnayake said that discussions are being held with financial institutions including the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank to provide fertilizer subsidies to farmers.
He also pointed out that the government is working to provide necessary facilities for the promotion of crops such as tea, rubber, coconut and maize, and additional funds have been allocated in this year’s interim budget for the import of seeds.
