In the absence of a functioning parliament, a nation loses its democratic essence – Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardhena

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena emphasized that the cornerstone of democracy lies within the parliament itself, asserting that a country deprived of Parliamentary functionality inevitably veers off course without any reins of control.

The speaker underscored the indispensable role of the legislature, highlighting that neither the judiciary nor the executive can effectively operate in isolation; it is the harmonious interplay of these three pillars that charts a nation’s path towards progress.

The Speaker shared these remarks while addressing student Parliamentarians of Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya, Kadawata .

The inaugural meeting of the Student Parliament of Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya, Kadawata took place today (19) in the main hall of the former parliamentary building, now part of the current Presidential Secretariat. This event was organized by the Communications Department of the Parliament of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Presidential Secretariat, under the guidance of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena extended his greetings to the student parliamentarians and provided them with insights into the history of Parliament. Additionally, the President’s Senior Adviser on National Security and Chief of Presidential Staff, Sagala Ratnayaka, presented certificates to the participating students, acknowledging their involvement in the Student Parliament.

Expanding on his remarks, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena emphasized the historical significance of the gathering, noting that the students were convened in the venerable halls of the old parliament where past leaders formulated the nation’s laws and regulations. He underscored that parliament stands as the epitome of freedom of expression, where individuals can voice both praise and critique without restraint.

Highlighting the essence of democracy within parliamentary proceedings, Speaker Abeywardena pointed out instances where members of parliament, including him, are subject to criticism, illustrating the vibrant democratic process at play. He reiterated that parliament serves as the cornerstone of democracy, asserting that without its proper functioning, governance within the country would falter. Therefore, he stressed, the effective operation of the parliament is paramount for the functioning of the nation as a whole.

The Judiciary, Executive, and Legislative branches play indispensable roles in shaping the future of a nation. Each of these institutions holds a distinct position and operates independently. Members of the legislature are elected through democratic processes, ensuring representation through popular vote.

Observing global scenarios, the absence of democracy often leads to dire consequences. Without democratic principles, countries may witness rampant violence and unchecked control over every aspect of society. Consequently, citizens may opt to flee such environments, seeking refuge in other nations where democratic values are upheld.

In conclusion, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena reiterated the pivotal role of parliament in enacting laws that uphold the freedoms of the people and ensure the security of the nation. Expressing his hope for the future, he expressed a wish that one of the students present would someday become a Member of Parliament, shouldering the responsibility of shaping the country’s legislative landscape.

The event was graced by the presence of esteemed individuals including Senior Advisor to the President on National Security and Chief of Staff to the President Sagala Ratnayaka, Assistant Director of the Presidential Secretariat Major Nadika Dangolla, Secretary General of the Parliament of Sri Lanka Ms. Kushani Rohanadeera, Deputy Secretary General and Chief of Staff of the Parliament of Sri Lanka Chaminda Kularatne, alongside other dignitaries and teachers from a Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya, Kadawata.
